The Florentine Crucifix, similar to the San Damiano crucifix, is rich in colour and symbolism. Our Blessed Mother and the beloved disciple, John, are mourning and keeping vigil on either side of the cross. Above the dying Jesus, is a scene of a pelican and her young. The pelican appears frequently in Christian art as a symbol of Christ. The pelican was believed to pierce its own breast with its beak and feed its young of its blood. Because of this, the pelican became a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself for humanity.
