Novenas are nine days of prayer usually asking God for a specific intention and can also include invoking the help of Mary and the saints by asking for their prayers. The length of nine days comes from when just before his Ascension, Jesus told his apostles to go to Jerusalem and to wait for the Holy Spirit to come. Mary and the apostles waited and prayed together during these 9 days and waited for the Holy Spirit.
There are many novenas to be found and our collection includes some select classic novenas. The novenas can be said at any time of the year, and it's also a special devotion to say them during specific times in the liturgical calendar, usually leading up to the vigil of the feast or solemnity for whom the novena is directed to.
 
Divine Mercy Novena
Jesus asked that the Feast of the Divine Mercy be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. St Faustina writes in her diary that Jesus said,
"On each day of the novena you will bring to My heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy ... On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My passion, for the graces for these souls."
