Along with holy water, holy oil, and a white garment, the Baptism candle is one of the symbols used during the sacrament of Baptism. Candles are used in the church as a sign that Jesus is the light of the world. Whenthe Pascahal candle is lit at Easter, it is a sign of the life of the Risen Christ. During the baptism, the baptism candle is lit from the Paschal candle and given to the parents and godparents for the child. The priest says, “Receive the light of Christ.” They are instructed to keep the flame of faith alive in their child and godchild.
 
A meaningful tradition is to light the baptism candle on the anniversary of your or child's baptism.
